Abstract

Introduction: this review mentions the structure of biofilms as well as gene transfer and adaptive mechanisms that contribute to antibiotic resistance along with the impact that environmental factors can have on resistant cells and the clinical challenges in eradicating these biofilms. Methodology: articles between 2019 and 2024 were used, the databases included were PubMed, Elsevier, Wiley and Springer, search terms such as "biofilms", "antibiotic resistance", "horizontal gene transfer" and "antibiofilm strategies" were used, then analyzed and an eligibility criterion was developed.  Results: a total of 630 articles were identified, of which a total of 143 articles were identified for full-text evaluation, of which 44 were included in the review. Discussion: the different topics of the review are alluded to as well as its overall contribution on the influence of structure, gene propagation, adaptation mechanisms, environmental effects, persistent cells and clinical challenges. Conclusions: the formation of biofilms demonstrates a complexity and a challenge in treating infections with this characteristic emphasizing the need for new strategies.
